Policy Overview

The National Electric Vehicle strategy aims to increase Australia’s electric vehicle uptake, which previously made up only 2% of Australian automotive sales in 2021, to reduce transport sector emissions in line with Australia’s climate goals.

The first consultation on the National Electric Vehicle Strategy (NEVS) was released in September 2022, running until October 2022. It proposed making electric vehicles more affordable, expanding their uptake and sought views on how fuel efficiency standards could be implemented in Australia, alongside other policies such as electric vehicle purchase incentives. Engagement on the fuel efficiency standards part of this consultation is analyzed on the InfluenceMap policy page for Australia’s New Vehicle Efficiency Standards (NVES).

Following this, in 2024 a parliamentary inquiry into the transition to electric vehicles, released an open call for submissions initially running until March 2024, which was later extended until September 2024.

A comprehensive review of the strategy is currently planned for 2026.
